The Hood River
From Tucker to Hood River
This
is the closest whitewater run to Hood River and is runnable most
of the winter and spring. You put-in at the Tucker bridge for some
fun, continuous Class III for a mile or so. You'll want to pay
attention as there is a dam that you'll need to portage that could
sneak up on you during high water.
After the dam, the river picks up a bit and the rapids are Class III+ at normal flows. The 2006 floods left debris in the river from the dam, so be on the lookout for pipes and other manmade objects.
There
is an alternate put-in just below the dam which makes for a pleasant
and continuous Class III run. There are tons of rocks for splatting,
rock spins, and fun mini-boofs. Rafters will enjoy the fun, strait
forward rapids.
Near the take-out, the river goes under a railroad bridge which get sketchy as the river is higher. You can scout this bridge on your way up Highway 35 or as you approach it on the river. Please be especially careful at high flows.
There are several places to take-out in town, but the easiest is probably at the archery range on river right.
