The Wind River
From Stabler to High Bridge (Upper)
The Upper Wind is a classic Class IV+/V trip in the Gorge about 45 minutes from Hood River.
You
put in by a cabin below a bridge at Stabler. It's about half a
mile down to the first rapid, Initiation. The bigger rapids
are
Ram's Horn, Walls to the Wall, and Climax and
they come in quick succession. After Climax, the river
is fairly easy Class II-III to the take-out on river right before
the High Bridge.
This trip has fairly easy logistics. From Hood River, get your self to Carson, Washington and the Wind River Road. Drive up the Wind River Road and take a left on High Bridge Road. Take your first right and please drive slowly thorough this short residential area. The road will turn to dirt and quickly take you to a place to park by the river.
To get to put in drive back up to the Wind River Road and head up the Wind to the hamlet of Stabler where there are several places to park.
