Running the Historic Highway

9.2 mile road run

This is probably the best overall place to run near Hood River for the following reasons:

  • It's 2 miles from downtown.
  • From the trailhead, it's 4.6 miles one-way to the end, so you can easily do any length run up to 9.2 miles.
  • Mileage is marked along the way.
  • It has some of the best views of the gorge.
  • Much of it is overhung by trees which give protection from rain and sun.

This run is along the Historic Columbia River Highway. To get there, you'll drive to the parking lot at the Tooth Rock Trailhead. Here you'll have to purchase a day or season parking pass.

The trail starts uphill and varies between hills and flat for the first 3.5 miles. At mile 3.5, you'll run through the Twin Tunnels which are followed by a fairly steep downhill. The trail officially ends at the Mark O. Hatfield Trailhead about a mile from Mosier.
